TroopPlanner v0.64.0

← All releases

Thirteen work items, 14 changes, and two new database migrations, each of which adds an empty column and rewrites nothing. One fix comes from a troop report: a group broadcast could show recipients' addresses to each other. It no longer does. Most of this release is privacy and safety work: an outside merit badge counselor now sees only their own scouts, and the public privacy and terms pages now promise only what the site actually does.

What's new on the site

Email

  • A group broadcast no longer shows everyone's address. A troop reported this. Each recipient sees only the troop's name on the To line.
  • One bad address no longer marks a whole broadcast Failed. Before, a single mistyped address failed the entire send, even when everybody else got it. The broken recipient then sat at "Pending" with no reason, and finding the cause took a database search. A broadcast now reads like "Sent to 171 · 1 failed · 6 skipped". The failed row names the problem, such as "Invalid email address", and links to that member so you can fix it.

Merit badges

  • An outside counselor sees only the scouts assigned to them. The counselor portal is for adults outside the troop, and a leader links each scout to a counselor on purpose.

Events

  • An archived event can be unarchived. An archived event's page now shows Unarchive to any leader who may archive events. One click brings it back with its RSVPs and attendance. It returns to the status it held before archiving: Draft, Published or Cancelled. An event archived before this release returns as Published if it was ever published, otherwise as Draft.

Signing in

  • Closing your browser now signs you out, unless you tick "Remember me". "Remember me" keeps you signed in on that device.
  • A password reset rejects weak passwords. A password reset now applies the same password rules as everywhere else: no common passwords, no all-number passwords, and nothing too close to your own name or username.

Photos and files

  • Undo after a photo change brings the old photo back. Undoing a change that replaced or removed a file, such as an equipment photo, a profile photo or an exit-wizard export, used to leave the record pointing at a file that no longer existed. Worse, it deleted the current file too, so both were gone. The old file is now kept for the 24-hour undo window, and Undo restores it.

The public website

  • The public pages say only what is true. The marketing, privacy and terms pages were checked line by line against the site. Claims it does not keep were rewritten. Among them:
    • The price lists "up to 120 Scouts and 120 adults; ask us to raise the limit", not "unlimited".
    • The sign-up button reads "Request Free Trial", since a person sets up each troop, usually within a day.
    • Scoutbook import lists what it actually brings in: roster, positions, ranks, merit badges and rank requirements.
    • Program Planning is marked "Coming soon".
    • The privacy policy now says that medical information entered by leaders is stored encrypted, that a scout can update parts of their own profile once a parent consents, and that leaders can deactivate a member while permanent deletion is a request to us.
    • The privacy contact is now support@troopplanner.com.

Behind the scenes

Nothing here changes what you see on the site.

  • A closed troop's photos and files are kept for six months. The terms promise at least six months to export after a troop closes. A nightly job was deleting a retired troop's files after 90 days. It now waits six months, and the number comes from one place so it cannot drift below the promise again.
  • The member data export holds current files only. It used to try to include old, replaced photos too.
