Open the phone version

You can also type it in. Add /app/ to the end of your troop's web address, like troopplanner.com/troop/troop-162-va/app/.

Either way you land on the same screen: a greeting, your rank progress if you are a Scout, and the events coming up.

Add it to your home screen

This is the step that makes it feel like an app. Do it once.

iPhone or iPad. Open the page in Safari. Tap the share button — the square with an arrow pointing up. Scroll down the list and tap Add to Home Screen, then Add.

Android. Open the page in Chrome. Tap the three dots in the corner, then tap Install app or Add to Home screen.

The icon lands on your home screen under your troop's number, like Troop 162. Tapping it opens straight into the phone version with no browser bars in the way.

The bar along the bottom

Everything is reached from the bar at the bottom of the screen. This is the whole menu — there is nothing hidden behind it.

Home. Your greeting, your rank progress, any merit badges on the go, and the events in the next three weeks.

Events. What is coming up, with your answer on each one. Tap an event to open it and RSVP.

Advance. The advancement tracker. Scouts see their own. Leaders see a list and tap through to a Scout.

Reqs. Every rank and merit badge requirement, to read whenever you want. Handy at a meeting or on a trail.

Roster. A searchable list of the troop. This one only appears if your troop has given you permission to see the roster.

Counsel. Merit badge counselors, by badge. This one only appears for people allowed to see counselor records.

So most people see four or five tabs, not six. A missing tab is a permission your troop has not given you, not a fault.

Out of signal

Camp has no bars. It still opens.

The phone version keeps a copy of what you have already looked at. That copy lives on your phone, so it works in a valley with no signal at all.

Already openedPages you have looked at before still open. Your tracker and the requirements are the ones worth opening at home first.

Never openedAnything new shows a page saying You're offline. Nothing is broken. Come back when you have a signal.

Sign-offs waitA leader can record a sign-off with no signal. It sits on the phone and sends itself the moment the signal comes back.

Before you goOpen the app once on the drive out, while you still have bars. That fills the copy with what you will want.

Make it open there every time

If the phone version is the only one you ever want, you can tell TroopPlanner to go there on its own.

Tap your name in the top bar to open your own page, find Preferences, and set Default App After Login to Scout App. Then tap Save preferences.

From then on, signing in takes you straight there. Set it back to Desktop dashboard whenever you want the full version again.

Troubleshooting

When it doesn't work

Nearly all of these come down to which browser you used.

What happened	What to do
There is no Add to Home Screen option	On an iPhone this only works in Safari. Chrome and Firefox on an iPhone do not offer it. Open the page in Safari and try again.
The icon opens the wrong troop	The icon remembers the address you added it from. Delete it, open the right troop's page, and add it again.
A tab I expected is missing	Roster and Counsel only appear for people whose troop has given them that permission. Ask a leader if you need one.
It says You're offline at home	Your phone thinks it has no connection. Check wifi, then close and reopen the app.
Something looks out of date	You are probably reading the saved copy. Pull down to refresh once you are back in signal.
I want the full version back	Take /app/ off the end of the address, or set Default App After Login back to Desktop dashboard.

Leaders: the phone version is the one to point new families at. It is the same account and the same data — there is nothing separate to set up, and nothing extra to pay for.
